Just thinking about Cinco de Mayo makes me depressed, so what could be better to get me in the mood than some Morrissey with limón y sal. Behold the music video for "Cada día es domingo" by Mexrrissey, which we're premiering right here.

As it has been well-documented, Mexicans have a soft spot for the Smiths frontman and rock quasigod (it's the novela-levels of melodrama that's irresistible.) Thankfully, musician Camilo Lara (Mexican Institute of Sound) has assembled a squad of compatriots to create Mexrrissey -- an all-star Morrissey tribute band comprised of Lara, Ceci Bastida, Chetes, Adanowsky, Jay de la Cueva and others. Their first album, No Manchester, came out recently and includes Spanish language covers of Morrissey and The Smiths songs with Mexican arrangements - mariachi, cumbia, and more. Cool!

As for why they're premiering their music video on such a momentous holiday, Mexrrissey member Ceci Bastida emailed us some words of wisdom: “Cinco de Mayo has become such a cultural event for Latinos in the US that releasing this video to coincide with it made a funny kind of sense,” she says. “You’ve got an Irish immigrant in Manchester who’s become an icon in the Mexican-American community, and a holiday that celebrates a Mexican victory over the French that is celebrated more in the US than in Mexico. Those kind of collisions are what Mexrrissey is all about."

Adds bandleader Camilo Lara: "We filmed the video at the famed Salford Lads' Club in Manchester while on tour in the UK this April. We thought it'd be fitting since the location is such an iconic part of The Smiths' history."

Mexrrissey is playing Central Park Summerstage in New York City on July 6 and Ruido Fest in Chicao on July 8th.

In the meantime, have a very emo Cinco de Moz.
